Late afternoon of our second day we took a train from Rome to Frascati. That evening we were scheduled for The Old Frascati Wine Tour. After a quick 30 minute train ride we were in Frascati and met our tour guide at the station.
We were given a tour of the town along with a history lesson. There is some great history here, along with some sad stories from WWII.
We visited the local bakery and pizza place, had a snack then took a van up to the winery and vineyard outside of town. I always thought movies made locations look better on film than in real life. However, when we got to this vineyard I realized that all the pictures couldn't do this place justice.
Next was a tour of the vineyard, where we were given tips on what it takes to manage the vineyard. Then we headed inside where they showed how they made the wine.
We continued down to some caves where they age the wine. As we went deeper into the caves the bottles got older and older. They had some bottles of wine that have been sitting there since 1943.
From there we went up to the dining room and had our tasting, with some good instructions on how to tell what is good wine and not so good wine.
When we were done with our tasting we took the van back to a local restaurant, had a great Italian dinner and finished off the wine from the tasting.
We purchased a few bottle to bring home. I still have one bottle I am saving for a special day.
We hopped on a train and headed back to Rome for some more Gelato and some sleep. A great day!
