Sorrento

After spending a few relaxing days in Gaeta it was time to head south to Sorrento.  We took the fast route on the highway.  This was not the most scenic route, but was fast and by far the easiest driving of the trip.  I must have gotten too comfortable with the drive though because a few months later I got mail from Italy and it was a speeding ticket!  Watch out for the cameras on the highways.  It said I was going 6 km above the speed limit.

Sorrento is a beautiful southern Italy city.  The views from the hilltops are something to see.  If you look closely through the haze you can see Mount Vesuvius.

The host of our apartment in Sorrento wanted us to park at the local bus stop.  Apparently the road was too small to let us drive on it and they would have to drive us back and forth to the apartment.

The picture on the right shows the road to the apartment.  At first glance it looks a little narrow, but certainly not anything to worry about.  However, as the host drove up the street we took the "road" on the right, in the picture.  I thought that was a sidewalk!  If you look through our Sorrento album you will find a video of our drive back down the road.

The apartment was set up on a hill.  Once we parked there was a little bit of a walk.  This was a lemon farm with lemon trees on on both sides of the walkway.

There was a porch on the top floor of the house with a view of Sorrento and Mount Vesuvius. I got some great sunset pictures.

We spent spent several nights in Sorrento because we could drive down to the harbor, take a boat to the Island of Capri and it is only a 45 minute drive to the Amalfi Coast.

Sorrento is a hillside city.  Down near the water the traffic is heavy with scooters everywhere.  As you drive up the hill the traffic gets lighter and there are some sections of the city where there are no cars.  You can walk through the streets to shop or find a nice restaurant.  We took one evening and walked up through the city, had dinner at a nice restaurant and saw some of the sights in the city.  I could have spent a little more time here.

This picture is taken from a main road in the modern day city.  I was not expecting this when I looked over the side of the bridge.  I expected to see water and instead was an old building set down in a small valley.

If you want to see more pictures of our time in Sorrento please feel free to look through our Sorrento Italy 2018 Album.
